The Volunteer Experience

The videos below depict some of Rochester’s real vaccine volunteers. You'll hear them talk about their experiences. You can learn from their personal stories and understand our research from their perspective. Select which volunteer you would like to meet by clicking the 'screen' box beneath each heading.

Cheryl's Experience

Cheryl shares her involvement in the Rochester community as an AIDS advocate at a local agency. She describes the process of her getting involved and how she learned about the study. Cheryl makes a compelling plea for women and men to get involved in the local vaccine effort.

David's Experience

David is a college student concerned about saving lives. He has researched how vaccines work and how viruses work. He would like to share with you why it was important for him to volunteer.

Lisa's Experience

Lisa describes the atmosphere and her comfort level while interacting with the staff. Lisa tells a story of her family and friends and their response to her involvement with this important research study. She also describes her physical response to the injections.

A Closer Walk

Click on the link to launch a preview of the documentary “A Closer Walk”. This award winning documentary was filmed on four continents and tells how the global AIDS epidemic continues unchecked. The full length film is sensitively narrated by actors Glenn Close and Will Smith. A Closer Walk is directed and produced by local film maker(s) Robert Bilheimer and Heidi Ostertag, in association with the Global Health Council.
